Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools course is aimed at anyone looking to work in supporting teaching and learning in schools, for example as a teaching assistant. The primary function of a teaching assistant is to support the teacher in the classroom to ensure the pupils are able to derive the most benefit from each lesson. 
 
Our teaching and learning course focuses on understanding, supporting, safeguarding and developing children and young people. It not only covers the theoretical knowledge underpinning the work of a teaching assistant, but it also requires a practical and competence-based element giving you the opportunity to conduct some of your learning in the workplace. 
Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Award in Supporting  
Teaching and Learning in Schools 
 
The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is a knowledge-based qualification which supports transition, pre-service or early career learning for all support staff roles in schools. The Award is made up of four mandatory units covering the essential knowledge required to work with children and young people and the school context. The Level 3 Award provides the essential knowledge needed to work with children and young people in a school context.  
 
The Award might be particularly suitable for: 
Those looking for an introductory qualification as a preparation for working in 
schools 
Those who already hold a Level 3 qualification, or above, in their specialist area 
for example administration or catering, but are looking to move into a similar 
role in a school 
Recently appointed support staff who are new to working in schools. 
 
Units: 
The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is a 12-credit qualification that consists of 4 mandatory units that provide for a combined total of 12 credits. 
 
 
Course Duration And Times: 
4- 6 hours a week 
4 month maximum

1. Communication and Professional Relationships with Children, Young People and Adults (2 credits) 
6. Schools As Organisations (3 credits) 
 
 
Entry requirements: 
GCSEs at grades at C and above

Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Certificate in Supporting  
Teaching and Learning in Schools 
 
The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools combines knowledge and practice for those support staff roles that directly support teaching and learning, for example teaching assistants or learning support assistants. The Certificate incorporates the Level 3 Award units with additional mandatory units derived from the Level 3 NOS for Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. The Level 3  
 
The Certificate is designed to provide: 
Education and training for those with a responsibility to support teaching and 
learning within educational settings 
Opportunities for those supporting teaching and learning in schools to achieve a 
nationally recognised, Level 3 vocational qualification 
The knowledge, understanding and skills learners need to provide effective 
support for teaching and learning in educational settings 
Opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal 
qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life. 
 
Units: 
The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is a 32 credit qualification that consists of 11 mandatory units. At least 24 credits must be achieved at the level of the qualification or above. 
 
Mandatory Units: 
1. Communication and Professional Relationships with Children, Young People and Adults (2 credits) 
2. Develop Professional Relationships with Children, Young People and Adults ( 2 credits) 
 
Course Duration And Times: 
4- 6 hours a week 
8 month maximum 
 
 
3. Engage in Personal Development in Health, Social Care or Children’s and Young People’s Settings (3 credits) 
4. Promote Children and Young People’s Positive Behaviour (3 creits) 
5. Promote Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Work with 
Children and Young People (2 credits) 
6. Schools as Organisations (3 credits) 
7. Support Assessment for Learning (4 credits)

What Can I Do After Taking These Courses? 
 
Become a teaching assistant. After successfully completing our Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Level 3, you could apply for a teaching assistant position within a nursery, infant or junior school, special school, secondary school or independent school, earning up to £18,000*/year. 
 
Gain a promotion. If you are already working as a teaching assistant you may be eligible to work without supervision, for a promotion to Senior Teaching Assistant, Senior Learning Support Assistant or Senior Special Educational Needs Assistant, and for an increase in pay. 
 
Study for a foundation degree. If you wish to attend university and obtain a degree, you may be able to study for a foundation degree. 
 
Build your career. If you wish to increase your responsibilities and build your teaching assistant career you could continue your teaching and learning courses to become anything from a Higher Level Teaching Assistant to a Teacher by progressing to other higher level courses.
